TELLING the boss where to go, leaving the shackles of the corporate umbrella and surrounding yourself with your kids instead of colleagues is a dream for many, but it can be a hard one to establish without the proper property support.

Finding a home appropriate to run a business from can be a hassle, so imagine trying to find one suitable for two.

That was the case for Yaroomba couple Deane and Krishna Everson.

Deane runs his business of seven years, Vitality Options Massage, downstairs, while Krishna’s office for Healthy Marketing operates out of an office upstairs.

Yet the two, along with children Luke, 10, and Lily, 5, have managed to have found a work/life balance suitable for them.

“The only thing we fight over is the phone line,” Deane joked.

“We both really like working from home, I never thought I would want to work for myself. But it has turned out so well,” Krishna said.

“It suits our needs well. We both really enjoy it.”

With stunning views of Mount Coolum, it’s easy to see the attraction.

Deane has run his business out of four different homes now.

And as their family grew, so did their needs.

Their first home was fine, but once little Lily came along and Deane had to give up his work space for a nursery, it was time to move on.

The couple’s third property seemed perfect, the garage was self-contained, well suited for Deane’s needs, although it allowed no internal access to the house.

“It was built like a granny flat just without the kitchen,” Krishna said.

“A lot of garages can double as an office or a workspace.”

Krishna had several tips for anyone looking at working from home.

“Always think ahead in advance. Circumstances change and you should think about how your family will grow,” she said.

“Separate areas are important as well. You should be able to block off noise from the lounge room with at least a door.

“You can be adjacent to the lounge room like me but not in the lounge room, it’s too distracting.”

The Eversons have been renting their Yaroomba address now for a year, and plan on staying there.

“It’s perfect for us,” Deane said.

There are pitfalls to working from home however, such as sacrificing any walk by traffic a normal shop front on a busy street would normally receive.

But there are ways around it, according to Krishna.

“I’ve got a strong presence on Facebook and with my own website. We’re more active in the community and networking so we still get our name out there.”

“The cost of a premises is ridiculous, I don’t know how people make a living doing it.”

Krishna said finding the perfect home to suit their many needs came down to timing.

“I think the time of year you look for a house can determine it,” she said.

“For us it was after the holiday season, because so many people were looking to move on then.”

Lifestyle Careers founder and business manager Leah Gibbs said much work can be done from home now thanks to technology.

“People who work from home do all sorts of jobs – from customer service and sales through to marketing consulting, web and graphic design. If you have a computer, headset and a good, reliable internet and phone connection, there are so many different jobs you can do,” she said.

“So many people these days want the flexibility that a work from home career provides, but so many of them don’t think it’s possible.”

Ms Gibbs said depending on the work, renovations are sometimes in order.

“It all depends upon the work people want to do from home. If you are a writer and you are seeking freelancing opportunities to write from home, all you need is an area in your home to set your computer up on with an internet and phone connection.

“If on the other hand, you would like to start a home business such as a hair salon, you will naturally need to undertake renovation work to convert your garage into a salon.”

She said as well as tax benefits and the ability to claim certain expenses, there were many benefits to working from home.

“Working from home definitely provides you with a great opportunity to achieve a good work/life balance. This is only possible though when you draw that clear line in the sand and set solid boundaries,” she said.

“Set your working hours, so you have quality time for your family and those essential household chores. Do this and you will achieve a good work/life balance. When people fail to draw that all-important line in the sand, that’s when the work/life balance suffers, along with the wellbeing of the individual and their family.”

On the surface of it this is a very ordinary question, but what’s your answer? A new pair of shoes, plenty of money, not having to work or the natural beauty of a sunset.

Author of the report is Professor Bob Cummins, from Deakin University, collated ten years of findings from the Australian Wellbeing Index to find out “What Makes Us Happy”. Apart from Julia Gillard’s election as Prime Minister which makes Australian women very happy other key happiness creators are standard of living, health, achieving in life, relationships and community connection.

Professor Cummins told Jill that we are born with an inbuilt base level of happiness and it’s the things that happen in our lives that make it go up and down.

How does Lifestyle Careers help people work from home?

Lifestyle Careers is an online recruitment job board designed for people seeking opportunities to work flexibly with a strong focus on telecommuting and working from home.

If you are a professional looking for a flexible work arrangement then you are in the right place. We have a large and growing number of clients throughout Australia and New Zealand who support our aims and who can offer fulfilling career opportunities whilst still enabling you to achieve your work-life balance.

So many people these days want the flexibility that a work from home career provides, but so many of them don’t think it’s possible. Many people associate work from home opportunities with scams and pyramid schemes, so they dismiss the desire they have to work from home. Lifestyle Careers was created by me, to put these people in touch with genuine work from home opportunities which include flexible employment, freelancing positions, telecommuting positions and legitimate business opportunities.

What kind of work can be done from home?

You would be surprised at just how much can be done from home thanks to technology. People who work from home do all sorts of jobs – from customer service and sales through to marketing consulting, web and graphic design. If you have a computer, headset and a good, reliable internet and phone connection, there are so many different jobs you can do.

Do people have to do any work on their home e.g. renovations in order to be able to work there?

It all depends upon the work people want to do from home. If you are a writer and you are seeking freelancing opportunities to write from home, all you need is an area in your home to set your computer up on with an internet and phone connection. If on the other hand, you would like to start a home business such as a hair salon, you will naturally need to undertake renovation at work to convert your garage into a salon.

What are the pros of working from home?

There are so many pros to be enjoyed by working from home, and your lifestyle will really determine what those pros are likely to be. The common ones though:

Avoiding the commute to and from work;

Being able to work your own hours;

Being able to wear whatever clothing you want;

Being able to look after your children and save money on childcare costs;

Not having to put up with office politics;

Enjoying the benefits of being your own boss (if you’re in business) without the overheads of a commercial premises;

Having the flexibility to do what you want, when you want; and

Having the ability to live anywhere you want and still do work you love.

Flexible working also benefits society by reducing traffic and pollution, prosperity in rural areas, increased employment opportunities for the disabled and increased sense of community focus.

You can watch TV or listen to music and work at the same time because you won’t be disrupting another office employee

What are the cons?

It should be recognized that flexible working does not suit everyone. Some people prefer the structured, work day and perform better when they are surrounded by their Colleagues. However, there are a great many people who are well suited to flexible working patterns and who not only improve their productivity but greatly enhance their own quality of life. Working from home isn’t for everybody, because some people struggle with the following:

If you aren’t self-motivated, don’t have proven self-discipline and don’t have the capacity to begin your work on the same schedule as those who commuted to the actual business office, you may have some immediate challenges.

Not getting out of the house to go to work;

Balancing home duties with the responsibilities that come with working from home.

Constant interruptions by a spouse, children, and friends who know you’re home all day

You can become a workaholic or office junkie who’s trapped in a routine that is destined to result in personal burnout.

Overall, despite the cons, working from home has caught on in a big way, as more and more people see the advantages of earning a living from the comfort of their own home.

Are you aware of any tax benefits that can be gained from working at home? Are people eligible for anything special?

If you are working from home and it is a part of your own business, then you will be able to claim expenses and input tax benefits. Expenses can include things such as furniture you buy for your work at home, e.g. desks and chairs. You can claim the cost of these as an expense associated with generating your income at tax time. And whenever you pay GST for items and services you pay for that you need for your work at home, you can claim the GST as an input tax credit when you lodge your Business Activity Statement (BAS). For full details on the tax advantages, definitely talk to your accountant and check with the ATO to find out what business expenses you may claim.

Does working from home help or hinder a good work/life balance?

Working from home definitely provides you with a great opportunity to achieve a good work/life balance. This is only possible though when you draw that clear line in the sand and set solid boundaries. Set your working hours, so you have quality time for your family and those essential household chores. Do this and you will achieve a good work/life balance. When people fail to draw that all-important line in the sand, that’s when the work/life balance suffers, along with the wellbeing of the individual and their family.

What’s your advice to anyone looking to begin working at home?

Have a good think about what you really want to do. What do you enjoy doing? What are you good at doing? What, in your mind, is the ideal way to make money from home? Make a list of what you love and what sort of lifestyle you want, and then create what you believe your dream, work at home career will be. Then go out there and find an opportunity that allows you to make that a reality, or create a business that allows you do achieve it.

Is working at home hard to maintain? What are the pitfalls?

Not at all, provided you have in place that solid line in the sand that protects your quality home/family time. In other words, you need to be firm when it comes to your work time and you need to plan your time well, so your work life and your home/family life can co-exist and thrive. The pitfalls of working from home predominantly concern maintaining a healthy work/life balance, and you can avoid this by keeping to my advice of drawing that line in the sand. I also advise people to build a strong support network around them, preferably of others who also work from home. This helps people to not feel isolated working from home, and it provides people with a community to network with when they need to get some new ideas – or even if they want to vent!

ANZ says it will pay primary-caregivers a $4,000 childcare allowance as part of new measures designed to improve gender diversity at senior levels.

The measures will also include superannuation on all forms of paid parental leave, Melbourne-based ANZ said in a statement on Wednesday.

ANZ chief executive Mike Smith said the 2010 EOWA Women in Leadership census, launched on Wednesday, showed little progress to improve the representation of women in senior executive roles and on boards among Australian companies.

Advertisement: Story continues below “Clearly there’s a need for a new way forward,” Mr Smith said in a statement.

“One issue is to address the reality of what happens to women in business when they take time off to have children. We need to stop penalising mothers.”

The bank is hoping its approach will encourage women back to work after the birth of a child and increase the representation of women in senior management positions.

“The measures we’ve announced are intended to have an immediate impact on our ability to retain talented women and over time help increase the number of senior women at ANZ,” Mr Smith said.

ANZ’s $4,000 childcare allowance will be paid to Australia-based primary caregivers on their return to work.

In Australia, ANZ offers 12 weeks paid parental leave at full pay with no qualifying period.

In New Zealand, ANZ will extend its top-up parental leave payment to 14 weeks from 12.

TAX breaks will be extended to employers hiring disabled people as part of a $2 billion funding boost for the sector, the New South Wales Government has announced.

The payroll tax exemption scheme, effective from June 2011, will enable employers to claim a rebate on workers with a severe disability.

The extra cash takes to $5.5 billion the total to be spent assisting the disabled over 10 years under the Stronger Together program, Premier Kristina Keneally said.

It marks the biggest investment in the sector by any state in Australia, she added.

The plans were drawn up following extensive consultation with disability service providers, their carers and families.

Ms Keneally said she had drawn on her own personal experiences in designing the new legislation alongside Disability Services Minister Peter Primrose. She said she took enormous pride in making the announcement.

“It is the largest increase in funding for disability services in our history and the most significant investment made by a state government in Australia,” Ms Keneally said.

“By the final year of Stronger Together we will have contributed more than $5 billion in additional funding to the sector.

“I know just how important that investment is because the cause is one close to my own heart.

“Family experience, together with my time spent working in the community sector and later as Minister for Disability Services, has made me keenly aware of the needs of people with a disability and determined that my Government will do all it can to help.”

Since the program was launched in 2006, the Government has injected $1.3 billion in growth funding to the disability sector.

Additional funding will increase disability services capacity by an estimated 47,000 places over the next five years.

“We recognise there is still more to do to make sure we get the plan right for the next five years,” Ms Keneally said.

Mr Primrose welcomed the announcement, saying he hoped the new legislation would help employers give jobs to an extra 6000 people with disabilities by 2016.

With the ageing of the population and changing labour market conditions, adopting a flexible approach to work helps businesses attract a diverse workforce including mature age workers, those in remote communities, parents and people with disabilities. Research shows that implementing flexibility helps improve productivity as employees have increased levels of engagement, job-satisfaction and well-being.

The issue of finding and attaining a good balance between work and personal life is a growing trend for job seekers when making career decisions. Balancing work with family and personal responsibilities is a challenge in our busy lives. When searching for jobs online, most job seekers prefer niche job boards over general job boards because these sites offer more targeted job search results and a greater variety of relevant job opportunities.

The concept of working from home, flexible working and telecommuting has gained momentum over the past few years and is widely becoming accepted, recognized, and formalized across the board. All tiers of Government and private sector companies are recognizing the benefits of work life balance initiatives.

Lifestyle Careers understands this. Job Board owner, Leah Gibbs, created the business after being frustrated at the lack of flexible options available to job seekers. A finalist in the 2009 REA Recruitment Industry Awards, Lifestyle Careers has this week re-launched on a new job board platform. “We spent time listening to the feedback from our website users who wanted a cleaner and simpler way to search for a flexible job” Gibbs said.

The re-launched job board has made it easier for job seekers to search and apply for jobs with new functionality including SMS job alerts and Facebook Connect integration.

The advertisers section has also been updated to streamline job posting and integrated with multi-posting system JobAdder. Advertisers are provided with valuable statistical tools including advertising analytics.

“In just over 10 months since the site’s first launch, we have established a considerable database of flexible job seekers, with a heavy traffic flow of job seekers visiting on a daily basis,” she says.

For a good range of flexible jobs, go to www.lifestylecareers.com.au and see what’s out there for you.
