The other day, I just stopped caring.
I had had a bad week, with a range of things conspiring to get me down, and as I made my essential morning coffee, I realised: I do not care. I couldn’t be bothered, I just had one of those days.
I didn’t care about my work, the appointments I had that day, the things on my to-do list: I was despondent, down and had a decidedly “Meh” attitude to everything.
It’s not the first day I have felt like this, and I very much doubt it will be the last. We all have them, whether we run our own business, work for a boss, or work from home, whether we love our jobs and lives, or feel they leave a lot to be desired at the best of times.
How do we drag ourselves out of it? For me, it’s a case of faking it til I make it: Plaster on a smile, my mum says, pop on some lipstick, act like you are thrilled to hear from people, and eventually you have tricked yourself into believing it.
Really, mum I used to think: am I so stupid I can be tricked by myself? Um, I don’t think so.
But, as usual with these things, mum was right. I took extra care with clothes and make-up (shallow but true: the mood-boosting benefits of a good hair day, nice lippy, and nice clothes cannot be underestimated), and immediately threw myself into the day’s phone calls.
An hour later, my mood had brightened considerably. I wasn’t quite out of my bad mood – my bad moods are more stubborn than that – but I wasn’t close to cancelling the day and heading for the couch either.
Other people have their own methods: a jog, a walk, a cry, yoga, a scream, a call to your mum or a friend. But for those who don’t, I highly recommend faking it. Let’s face it, it’s something most of us have had experience with, one way or another…
