Resumes, Resumes, Resumes – What is important?

Resumes are something I see every day in my job and yet I am amazed at how many people do not think they are important or do not put the time in to make sure their resume presents them in the best light. Your resumes is your first impression to a recruiter /employer and is the document that your career and ability to pay the bills and reach your dreams is based on.  So what is important?

Your Details

Make sure that you name, phone number and address are correct and easy to find on your resume. How else are we to contact you?  If these details are not correct or easy to find a potential employer may skip your resume and put it in the ‘all too hard basket’.

Employment Details

If an employer or a recruiter have to come back to ask you a question about your employment details and they have 10 other resumes of a similar nature who are they going to contact first? Make sure that you provide, dates, details of your role, the company you worked for and achievements you made while in the position. If you have taken on a series of contract or temp roles it also helps to note these by the position so you are not seen as job skipping.

Career Objective

If you are looking for a career change tells us in your objective. The objective is your communication of where you see yourself in the next five years. This is also your chance to tell us what skills you have to offer your future employer and what type of role or employer you are looking for in your next role. (Tact is always good here as recruiters can send your applications to employers too.)

Does your resume tell us what you can really do?

There is no point to a “pretty” resume if an employer cannot see what you have done or can do.  Make sure that the information, titles and education clearly show the reader of your resume what you can do and what you have achieved in your past career. Your resume is your chance to shine and show off what you can do so now is the best time to do it.

i always have an issue with page number and what work experience you do/not include if you have a long work career – over 15 years.

also a gap in a career is proving hard to overcome even with help from professional hr people.

There are a number of resume formats you can use to apply for jobs that cover skills gaps etc.

The best thing to do is talk to a career or resume advisor about your personal situation as they can help you the best.
